Dr. Andrew Wakefield filed a defamation lawsuit in Travis County, Texas, District Court, January 3, 2012, against the British Medical Journal (BMJ), Fiona Godlee, the journal's editor, and Brian Deer, a reporter working for the BMJ.

The lawsuit is in response to a series of editorials and articles published by the BMJ, January 2011, which falsely accused Dr. Wakefield of research fraud in his Lancet study that found bowel disease in children with autism and raised questions about the safety of the MMR vaccine.
